Superintendent Dr. Rod Thompson joined Shakopee Public Schools in 2011. Dr. Thompson began his college career at Concordia College, Moorhead, where he received his social studies teaching license. He went on to get his Master’s and Specialist degrees and Principal licensure at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Rod graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Doctorate in Education and Tri-College University: North Dakota State University, Concordia College, and Minnesota State University Moorhead in Educational Policy and Administration. He enjoys teaching doctoral coursework and principal licensure classes at Bethel University and Saint Mary’s University.
Dr. Thompson is in charge of the leadership and administration of ISD 720 Shakopee School District. He is the Chief Executive Officer of one of the largest school districts in Minnesota. As Superintendent of Schools he reports to and administers the policies of the School Board. He provides leadership to a public school district of over 8,000 students, oversees an annual operating budget of more than $80 million dollars, oversees a building projects budget of over $100 million dollars, and is the leader of the one of the largest workforces in Scott County.
Dr. Thompson is committed to improving student achievement for all students, closing the opportunity and achievement gaps, and excellence with equity. Since his arrival five years ago, Shakopee Public Schools have made impressive academic progress on all statewide accountability tests. His responsibilities include overseeing a comprehensive strategic vision, driving a comprehensive curriculum, and building and strengthening relationships with all stakeholders in a diverse school community of around 40,000 people.
