Volleyball Team Ranked No. 9 in Preseason Poll
With five returning starters from a team that posted a 19-11 record in 2014, the Shakopee Sabers varsity volleyball team is looking forward to a successful season in 2015. The Sabers have already garnered some respect from opposing coaches as they are ranked No. 9 in the preseason Class 3A Coaches Association Poll.
“We are excited to bring back a lot of experience from last year’s team,” head coach Matt Busch said. “We will be a big team at the net and look to improve in the blocking area while hoping to frustrate opponents.”
Returning starters for the Sabers this year include senior middle blocker Lexi Haider, junior middle blocker Anna Blaschko, junior right side hitter Mikayla Pavlicek, junior libero Sydni Tran, and freshman Rachel Kilkelly.
Other returning varsity players include senior outside hitter Kasey Schleper, senior setter Emily Kranz, and senior defensive specialist Annie Rhinesmith. Newcomers to the varsity roster include junior setter Gabby Thom, junior middle blocker Maddie Weiss, junior right side hitter Hunter Weiss, and freshman outside hitter Maddie Wherley.
“We think that we can be a scrappy defensive powerhouse behind the big block. Offensively, we will ride the learning curve of our new setters, but plan to work on overall hitting efficiency as a primary goal. As always, we will work hard to be playing out best ball come playoff time.”
