• Internet Filtering (Securly)

The district uses an Internet filter called Securly on all of our devices.

    Summary

    • Always on, everywhere (on district devices)
    • Requires a district google account
    • Supports multiple groups for filtering
    • Parent access to student activity (more details on that below)

    How It Works

All of our district devices are set up to route all Internet traffic through Securly. This is true regardless of whether is connecting to the Internet from school, home, or anywhere else.

When users first try to go anywhere (aside from google.com) they will be asked to log in to their district google account, using the @shakopeeschools.org address.  This identifies the user to the Securly system so that we know who it is and can place them in the appropriate filtering group.

Filtering groups include staff, students K-8, students 9-12, no social media, and aggressive (see chart at bottom of this page).  We block the obvious categories for students (porn, drugs, gambling, other adult content, etc.). The no social media group also blocks social media sites, such as Facebook, Instagram, and so on.  The aggressive filter group blocks far more than it allows, and exists for those students who have demonstrated that they cannot handle the responsibility of using the Internet without significant supervision.

Securly was new for 2016-2017.  We continue to tweak some things, but the system is pretty stable at this point.

Parent Reports - Background and Q&A

    • Securly is continuously improving their parent portal.  As of February 2017, the system has started to send out reports to parents with student Internet activity.
    • These reports will be sent from "support@securly.com".  They should generally arrrive once a week on Thursdays.
    • We do not monitor personal devices.  We do monitor any district-assigned device for which students use their district login (the "@shakopeeschools.org" account).
    • Messages from Securly should include a link to create a Securly account so that you can more closely monitor student activity.
    • The report shows all Internet traffic, including advertising sites that may be part of webpages; there is not a way to leave that off of the report.  The report has groupings for all activity or can be broken down into categories such as videos, searches, social media, etc.
    • If you have a question about the report, please contact us via the help desk - particularly if there is confusion about the information on the report.  For example, Facebook traffic doesn't always mean that the student is actually on Facebook; it may be that website has a "like" button or uses Facebook as a login option, so it shows up on the report.
    • If your report includes multiple students: There is a search box in the top right corner of the parent portal. If the parent puts the email address of the student in that box, they can filter and see their activity.  Student e-mail addresses are in this format: Student ID #@shakopeeschools.org
    • A feature that is now available is the ability to set different restrictions for home use.  Within school, we would continue to use the categories mentioned above (Students K-8, Students 9-12, No Social Media, and Aggressive).  Securly has a help page that describes in detail how this feature works.
