Literacy Framework

A comprehensive literacy framework ensures that every student receives research-based reading instruction grounded in the Science of Reading. It intentionally integrates foundational skills, language comprehension, writing, speaking, and knowledge building so students develop both accurate word reading and deep understanding. By providing a consistent, evidence-based approach across classrooms, a comprehensive literacy framework helps all students become confident, capable readers and lifelong learners.

Scientifically research-based literacy practices are grounded in decades of evidence showing that children develop the foundations for reading through meaningful language, play, and responsive interactions. Research supports developmentally appropriate, inclusive instruction that intentionally builds oral language, vocabulary, phonological awareness, and background knowledge while supporting the whole child. Ongoing observation and evidence-based teaching ensure every child receives responsive instruction that builds a strong foundation for lifelong reading success.

Our teachers continuously deepen their knowledge through professional learning grounded in the Science of Reading and evidence-based instructional practices. They use student data, reflective practice, and instructional coaching to refine their teaching and meet the needs of every learner. This commitment to ongoing growth ensures high-quality, equitable literacy instruction that helps all students become successful readers and writers.

Shakopee dedicates 120 minutes to literacy instruction daily. This ensures every student receives the instruction and support they need to become a successful reader. Our elementary literacy block provides intentional time for language comprehension, systematic foundational skills instruction, and targeted intervention or enrichment based on individual student needs. This approach maximizes learning while ensuring all students receive timely, evidence-based support.

High-quality literacy resources are research-based, aligned to the Science of Reading, and intentionally designed to help all students develop strong reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. They provide a systematic progression of learning, integrate all essential components of literacy, and reflect the diverse identities and experiences of students. In Shakopee, we have carefully selected Creative Curriculum for our preschool learners, Arts & Letters as our K-5 Language Comprehension program, UFLI as our K-2 Foundational Skills curriculum, and 95 Phonics as our grades 3-5 Foundational Skills curriculum.  All of these high-quality resources meet Minnesota Department of Education standards and ensure every student has equitable access to engaging, evidence-based literacy instruction.

Our robust literacy assessment system provides timely, meaningful data to identify student strengths, guide instruction, monitor progress, and ensure every learner receives the support they need. It combines universal screening, diagnostic and classroom assessments, progress monitoring, and growth tracking to inform responsive, evidence-based teaching. This comprehensive approach helps educators make informed decisions that improve literacy outcomes for all students.
