Before students enter the doors at Shakopee High School, they will get a chance to experience the Academies of Shakopee through exciting Gateway Courses. The Academies of Shakopee is only one of two models in the state offering authentic, real-world learning experiences backed by more than 80 business and community partners.

Shakopee High School is proud to offer various athletic opportunities. East and West Middle School students can tryout for select High School athletics throughout the school year. The MSHSL determines grade eligibility for select sports. Alternative programs may be available through select youth associations or Shakopee Community Education. Middle School student eligibility is determined by High School registration/demand. Availability may vary each year.

Shakopee Public Schools has a variety of advanced courses intended to provide appropriate challenges for students who are interested in a more rigorous curriculum.

Students can select Accelerated Math courses (Grade 6 only), Accelerated English Language Arts (Grades 6, 7 & 8) and Accelerated Science courses (Grades 7 & 8). Students and families should carefully consider what the appropriate challenge is for them.

Shakopee Public Schools also offers a variety of advanced course options to students in Grades 9-12 and ways students can earn college credit. Please connect with your counselor for specific criteria.

AVID is a college readiness elective class held five days a week during the school day. It is offered to students who would like to prepare to attend a college or university. Students participate in AVID voluntarily. Students who would like to be in the class must complete an application and be interviewed to be considered for possible selection.

The curriculum includes WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading), note-taking, study skills, test preparation, and test-taking skills. There are also career and team building activities and visits to colleges and universities.

If selected, students sign the AVID Student Agreement committing to be in the class at least one year and to completing all required AVID work, taking notes in all subject area classes daily, using the AVID binder and planner for all classes and participating twice weekly in small group tutorial sessions during the AVID class with AVID tutors.

Other requirements include good citizenship, appropriate classroom behavior, good attendance, and minimum 2.0 GPA. AVID students are required to take at least one rigorous course each year. They must be able to complete advanced level work. Students must also demonstrate motivation, individual determination, and take responsibility for their own learning and success.

English Language Development for Multilingual Learners includes courses and services that are designed for students with a home or primary language other than English. Students are provided with English Language Development in addition to grade level content concepts.

Students qualify for ML support according to their scores on the ACCESS test/WIDA screener. The amount and type of support will be determined based on the ACCESS assessment, MN Department of Education guidelines and the district program model. Students will be scheduled into appropriate courses based on qualifying criteria.

Incoming 6th Grade Registration Timeline for the 2026-27 School Year:

• January 28-30: Middle school counselors will visit 5th Grade classrooms at each Shakopee elementary school to present information about 6th Grade courses and registration.
• January 30: Families will receive a Seesaw and email message that includes a link to the Registration Form that allows students to select their math, reading/language arts and music options. 
  • A form will also be sent home with each child with a QR code to the form.
  • Only a Google Form must be completed to register for 6th Grade by February 6, 2026.

Incoming 7th and 8th Grade Registration Timeline:

• January 7- 13, 2026: Middle school counselors will visit Advisory at each Shakopee middle school to present registration information.
• January 15-16, 2026: Middle school students register for classes in Advisory at each Shakopee middle school. Registration is completed in Infinite Campus.

Tuesday, January 13th is the day registration will kick off for current 9-11th graders for the 2026-27 school year.  

DAY 1 - Jan. 13th during 2nd block: Students will watch videos to prepare for choosing classes, and review the registration guide.

DAY 2 - Jan. 14th during 2nd block: Students will watch videos below & fill out their planning sheet.

DAY 3 - Jan. 15th during 2nd block: Students can watch optional mini videos below and begin finalizing their courses in their Academic Planner located in Infinite Campus.
