Meet the Board

Shakopee Public Schools is proud to be governed by a dedicated School Board, comprising seven committed community members. This Board of Education is entrusted with the oversight of Shakopee School District #720, ensuring its continued excellence and alignment with the community's educational aspirations.

The School Board's responsibilities are comprehensive, including the appointment of the Superintendent, approval of all staff hirings, resignations, terminations, and leaves of absence. They play a crucial role in the financial stewardship of the district by setting the annual local school levy and approving expenditures. Furthermore, the Board is responsible for the approval of educational programs and ensuring that proper facilities and equipment are available to support high-quality teaching and learning throughout the District. The Board maintains a high level of engagement with the community it serves, with a persistent focus on fostering the educational success of students and promoting the continued growth of our school community.


Board Member Elections and Student Representation

The seven members of the School Board are elected at-large during the November general election in even-numbered years. To ensure a balance of continuity and fresh perspectives, the election cycle is staggered: four board members are elected in one cycle, with the remaining three elected two years later.

As of May 16, 2022, Shakopee Public Schools has further enriched its governance structure by welcoming two Shakopee High School students to serve as ex-officio members of the School Board. For the 2025-26 school year, Shaunya Kumar (Class of 2026) and Bryan Phan (Class of 2027) serve as student representatives, providing invaluable student perspectives to the Board's deliberations.

Board Meeting Dates & Information

All Shakopee Public Schools board meetings are open to the public. Work sessions and meetings are generally held on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 6 p.m.  School Board work sessions are held at the District Office (1200 Shakopee Town Square) and School Board Meetings are held at the Shakopee High School Thrust Stage (100 17th Ave. W. Shakopee, MN) unless otherwise noted in the master calendar. Meetings are also livestreamed on the District's YouTube channel and saved for future reference. 
  • All board meetings are open to the public.
  • The board meeting agenda is posted at the district office on Friday afternoon prior to a meeting/work session as well as online (see link on this page).
  • Board meeting minutes are posted per public notice law and the website under 'Board Meetings' once approved. 
Each agenda includes a public comment section. The maximum time for public comment related to the agenda is a total of 15 minutes.  Individual speakers will be allowed no more than 2.5 minutes. Please reference Shakopee Public School's Policy 206 for additional information.
 
Public comment requests can be submitted to communications@shakopee.k12.mn.us no later than 5pm prior to the meeting. Additional public comment requests can be made onsite, the day of the meeting, starting at 5:30pm.

Minutes are posted once they are approved by the School Board Clerk and Board at the next applicable meeting. Agendas are posted by 3pm on the Wednesday to prior to a meeting; the agenda is also posted at the District Office. Video recordings of each meeting are also archived on the district YouTube channel.
