April 1, 2025 - Annual Integrated Pest Management Pesticide Notification

Shakopee Public Schools uses a licensed, professional pest control service firm for the prevention and control of rodents, insects, and other pests in and around the district's buildings.

Pests can sting, bite, cause contamination, damage property, and spread disease; therefore, we must prevent their presence and control them as necessary. The district or outside contractors may also apply herbicides on district properties, as deemed necessary.

The long-term health effects on children from the application of such pesticides may not be fully understood. All pest control materials are chosen and applied according to labeling directions per Federal law.

To limit the potential pesticide exposure, the district follows safety regulations to ensure pesticides are applied properly. All pesticide products, which are used in and around school buildings, are required to be registered with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, school employees and certified and licensed applicators are required by state and federal law to comply with all requirements of the pesticide label, including building sites, application rates, re-entry intervals, posting, use of personal protective equipment, use restrictions, and disposal on the product label. An estimated schedule of pesticide applications is available for review or copying at the district office.

AHERA Annual Asbestos Notification

During the past school year, and continuing into the 2025-2026 school year, the following asbestos management plan activities have been or are currently being completed, pursuant to the Environmental Protection Agency 40 CFR Part 763 - "Asbestos Containing Materials in Schools; Final Rule and Notice."

 ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR 2025-2026

• Periodic surveillance
• Asbestos Repairs
• Notification of Asbestos Locations for Short-Term Workers (Electricians, Plumbers, etc.)
• Training of District Personnel
• Abatement activities at East Middle School

Shakopee Public Schools has contracted through the Institute for Environmental Assessment (IEA) to provide Environmental, Health and Safety consulting services, including being involved in the above listed activities.

The complete, updated Asbestos Management Plan can be found in the Shakopee Public Schools District Office. The management plan can be viewed, without cost or restriction, during normal working hours. Copies can be obtained for a fee of $.10 per page.

Lead-in-Water Annual Notification

Minnesota Statute 121A.335 requires public school buildings serving pre-kindergarten through grade 12 to test for lead in water every 5 years. Shakopee Public Schools has historically conducted and continues to conduct Lead in Drinking Water testing per the Minnesota Department of Health guidelines.

The Shakopee Public School District has historically conducted, and continues to conduct, Lead in Drinking Water testing per the Minnesota Department of Health’s “Reducing Lead in Drinking Water: A Technical Guidance for Minnesota’s School and Child Care Facilities” recommendations. 

Any member of the public who is interested in discussing the district Lead in Drinking Water program or results, should contact the district office for access to the documentation.

Minnesota Statute 121A.335 requires public school buildings serving kindergarten through grade 12 to test for lead in water every 5 years.  This statute also requires school districts to make the results of the testing available to the public for review and to notify parents of the availability of the information.  Notification may be accomplished by publishing a statement in the “Back to School” newsletter or publication that is available to staff, student, parents and the public. 

Shakopee Public Schools is committed to providing a safe working and learning environment for employees and students.  The district has developed a lead in water management plan and testing program that complies with Minnesota Statute 121A.335, as well as recommendations from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Lead Contamination Control Act (LCCA) of 1988 and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), and Minnesota Department of Education (MDE).

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that enters buildings from surrounding soil. It is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, radioactive gas, the primary source of ionizing radiation to humans.

The level of radon gas present in an area may pose a health hazard to students and staff alike. Testing is the only way to determine how much radon is present in the school, though it is estimated that radon levels in schools are relatively low.

Test results are measured in picoCuries/liter (pCi/L) which are used to establish the action levels recommended by the EPA.

During the 2011-2012 school year, radon testing was performed at Jackson Elementary School. This building was the only site included during this testing due to it being a new facility in the district. A total of five radon testing devices were placed throughout Jackson Elementary School on December 1, 2011 and then collected on March 27, 2012 for a total of 118 days of testing. All five areas showed results well below the 4.0 pCi/L levels. Therefore, no further testing was required.

The most recent round of radon testing for Shakopee Public Schools took place during the 2016-17 school year. The testing started on November 9, 2016. 373 radon detector devices were placed throughout the district. A total of 317 devices were collected on March 17, 2017 for a total of 138 days of long term sampling. 12 areas in Eagle Creek Elementary, one area in Jackson Elementary, one area in Pearson 6th Grade Center, and one area in Shakopee High School were scheduled for retesting due to levels above 4.0 pCi/L

The above mentioned areas were retested during the 2017-18 school year. This testing started on December 14, 2017 and concluded February 13, 2018. 72 hours of continuous data was collected from each area in this round of testing. All 15 areas showed radon levels well below the 4.0 pCi/L action level for radon during occupied hours. No other testing was needed.

As an additional requirement by the Department of Education, ISD # 720 has developed and implemented an Indoor Air Quality Management Plan that addresses indoor air quality issues throughout the District.  Walkthroughs and inspections of the buildings are performed annually to detect current problems and prevent future problems from occurring.

Janet B. Johnson, Parents Right-To-Know Act, August 2003

A Minnesota state law went into effect in the year 2000 that requires schools to inform school employees and parents if they apply pesticides on school property.

Specifically, this law requires schools that apply these pesticides to maintain an estimated schedule of pesticide applications and to make the schedule available to employees and parents for review or copying at each school’s office.  Although not required by the law, schools may choose to include a copy of the estimated schedule of pesticide applications with this general notice.  The prospective dates for application are in early spring, mid-summer and late fall. 

State law also requires that you be told that the long-term health effects on children form the application of such pesticides or the class of chemicals to which they belong may not be fully understood.

Annual Notification of Availability of the Management Plan and Related Activities

All parents, teachers, and employee organizations of ISD 720 need to be informed that ISD 720 has on file a complete and updated Management Plan dealing with Asbestos Containing Building Materials (ACBM) within the School District’s Buildings.  The Management Plan is available for viewing by interested parties, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. in the Principal’s Office at each school site.  Copies of the management plan will be made by District personnel for a nominal cost.

As required by Federal law, the condition of asbestos in our school is surveyed every six months as part of an ongoing operations and maintenance program.  Identified concerns from these inspections are remedied by professional asbestos abatement contractors in a timely manner.  The most recent surveillance was completed in March, 2018.  There are no current plans to remove the remaining asbestos unless its condition deteriorates or it becomes necessary due to renovation.
