What is the purpose of the FAST Screeners? The FAST aMath and aReading are assessments given with three main purposes:
- Lets students and parents know current achievement level in a subject area
- Indicates student growth in a subject area
- Signifies to teachers and grade level teams which students might need additional supports or supplemental curriculum
What’s a screener? Assessment given to students that measures broad abilities in math and reading. This is a quick check we give to all of our students in 1st through 5th grades in the fall, winter, and spring.
How does it help my child? By giving teachers regular feedback about broad reading and math achievement, your child’s teacher can monitor student progress from one year to the next and from one season to the next in order to best provide each student with what they need.
What do these scores mean? aMath scores range from 150-250 and aReading scores range from 350-750. The scores are compared to all students who took the same test in the same season during the same grade level to provide a percentile. Shakopee Schools considers students who consistently score at the:
- 50th percentile and above to be on track
- Between the 40th and 49th percentile to be within the average range
- Between the 15th and 39th percentile will be monitored for potentially needing additional support
- Below the 15th percentile need support in order to be successful
What does “Additional Support” mean? Additional support will look different for each student. Examples include regular one-on-one work with their classroom teachers, small group work with an intervention specialist outside of the classroom, or additional time during the school day devoted to strengthening fundamentals in math or reading.
