NOVEMBER 27, 2018 - Director of Finance Jeff Priess and Matt Mayer from BerganKDV presented the 2017-18 school district audit.
Shakopee Public Schools received an unmodified opinion on the district's financial statements for the year ending June 30, 2018.
An unmodified opinion is the highest opinion a district can receive. The board accepted the Fiscal Year 2017-18 audit as presented.
"I have to give credit where credit is due," said Mayer."I would talk about Jeff and Suzanne (the district's former finance director). They've both done an excellent job. I had the pleasure of working with both of them. In my opinion, I think the key is the communication to the board and understanding their role. In a perfect environment, the board receives adequate information to put a budget together that moves you towards your financial goals and receives information during the year to allow you to monitor that budget to know if you're on track or off track with the ability to react and respond. The skill set of the folks in your Finance Department to provide you with reports and awareness has improved significantly over the course of the last couple of years. When I come and present this information, it should be boring because you should know month to month where you are and where you're going to be. I believe you have a team in place that's been providing that."
Also, the district's fund balance increased $1.77 million to $2.8 million. It's important to note, the land sale for the property near Jackson Elementary, is not included in this amount for the 2017-18 audit. The land sale is built into the 2018-19 budget.
