CAPS Healthcare and Medicine Students Host Teddy Bear Clinic
APRIL 26, 2019 - High school students in the CAPS (Center for Advanced Professional Studies) Healthcare and Medicine program made a special visit to Central Family Center to teach preschoolers about healthcare.
The Teddy Bear Clinic, now in its 3rd year, provides preschool students a hands-on experience to help ease the anxiety associated with visiting a doctor’s office.
This is Visara Sok’s 2nd year participating in the event. Sok, a senior at Shakopee High School, plans to work as a CNA (certified nursing assistant) over the summer. “The CAPS program allows me to get firsthand experience in the workforce. After my experience as a child and learning about the medical field through events similar to the Teddy Bear Clinic, I wanted to have the same impact on other kids. They’re smiling, happy, and curious. It’s awesome to see the impact this makes on young students.”
During the clinic, the teddy bear is the patient and CAPS students play the role of the doctor. Over the course of the two-day event, nearly 300 preschoolers visit eight different clinic stations.
The stations are both fun and interactive. They include patient admissions, vitals, first aid, healthy eating, dental health, handwashing, immunizations, and patient discharge.
Shakopee CAPS Healthcare and Medicine program fully immerses students in St. Francis Regional Medical Center providing unprecedented access to real world experiences in the dynamic field of healthcare and medicine. Partnering with experienced medical professionals, students will advance their understanding of healthcare systems, communications, legal issues, medical terminology, patient care, professionalism, ethics, and explore many career opportunities in healthcare.
Shakopee CAPS requires students to be active, independent learners and fosters empowerment, self-discovery, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. Students will engage in a variety of opportunities including case studies, problem and project-based learning, and tours. Through guided mentoring, students will participate in an internship experience that encompasses their personal interest in healthcare and medicine.
