Wellness Policy

A school wellness policy promotes the health and well-being of students and staff within the school environment. Key objectives of such policies can include:

• Promote Healthy Eating: Encourage nutritious food choices and limit the availability of unhealthy snacks and beverages in schools.
• Increase Physical Activity: Incorporate regular physical activity into the daily routines of students, promoting overall fitness and well-being.
• Support Mental Health: Address mental health issues by providing resources and support systems for students and staff.
• Educate on Health Issues: Provide educational programs that inform students about healthy lifestyle choices, including nutrition, physical activity, and mental health awareness.
• Create a Supportive Environment: Foster a school culture that supports healthy behaviors, engaging families and the community in wellness initiatives.
• Compliance with Regulations: Ensure adherence to federal and state regulations regarding student health and nutrition.

There are various ways to conduct a triennial assessment, ranging from very simple to quite complex. After evaluating different methods and tools, we chose a well-researched and user-friendly tool known as WellSAT.  Developed by the University of Connecticut  Rudd Center for Food Policy and Health, the WellSAT compares a school district’s wellness policy and practices with evidence-based recommendations.

The WellSAT tool assists school districts in assessing and enhancing their wellness policies and best practices by offering a quantitative score ‘report card’.  This score highlights both strengths and areas needing improvement in the district's approach to wellness. The WellSAT specifically addresses federal requirements and recommendations related to physical activity, physical education, and nutrition.

The tool consists of two distinct sections  that are completed separately. This allows districts to obtain actionable insights from the assessment results.

A detailed report card for the policy review and the practice assessments for grades K–5, 6–8, and 9–12 are summarized and available upon request. This report highlights the areas where the district is setting a strong example in promoting health and wellness and where there are opportunities to strengthen and clarify the language to better align with both evidence-based recommendations and the effective practices already in place across our schools.
