The Board of Education governs Shakopee School District #720. The board also hires the superintendent; approves staff hiring's, resignations, terminations and leaves of absence; sets the annual local school levy; approves expenditures; approves educational programs, and ensures proper facilities and equipment are available to support teaching and learning in the district.
The seven board members are elected at large during the November general election in odd-numbered years. Four board members are up for election one year and the other three are up for election two years later.
All board meetings are open to the public. Meetings are generally held on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the District Office at 1200 Town Square, Shakopee. The board meeting schedule is posted at the district office, publicized in the Shakopee Valley News, and available on the School Board Calendar.

Per School District Policy 206 Public Participation in Meetings:
The school board
shall normally provide a specified period of time when citizens may address the
school board on any topic, subject to the limitations of this policy. The school board reserves the right to
allocate a specific period of time for this purpose and limit time for speakers
accordingly. Except as
determined by the school board to be necessary or in an emergency, the school
board will not take action at the same meeting on an item raised for the first
time by the public.Policy 206 Public Participation in Meetings
