The Shakopee High School Drama program is open to students at all levels from grades 7 through 12. Though it is primarily a tradition that upper classroom will secure larger roles and responsibilities, I always encourage students from the junior high to actively pursue becoming involved. Often times, depending upon the production, there are specific needs for younger students.
The Drama program has many opportunities for junior high students throughout the school year. Whether it be securing a role on stage, or becoming an active participant in the crew or tech, I always encourage the younger students to come by and see if there might be something they would like to become involved in. We have an open door policy during rehearsals, where I welcome students to come in and watch the process of rehearsal. Many students will begin by working in crew, costuming, makeup, lighting or technical design; even selling tickets and ushering are opportunities that exist for the interested students. Certainly stage roles have been acquired as well.
