Shakopee West Middle School Student Chosen as Winner for Minnesota Doodle for Google Student Contest

Issued May 26, 2022

A talented Minnesota student could soon have her artwork on the Google homepage for hundreds of millions to see. Google is announcing the 54 State and Territory winners in its 14th annual Doodle for Google competition, a contest where K-12 students across the United States have the opportunity to create their own version of the Google logo inspired by the prompt "I care for myself by..."

Gabriella, an 8th grader from Shakopee West Middle School in Shakopee, is one of the 54 U.S. State and Territory Winners with her Doodle. "A Moment Immortalized in Gold." Gabriella's Doodle was selected from thousands of entries received this year. Gabriella's Doodle represents the statement "I care for myself by reading, drinking tea and drawing."

Students at Shakopee West Middle School helped Gabriella celebrate during a surprise assembly, where her family was in attendance along with Principal, Lori Link, Dean of Students and soon to be Principal, Gwynne Chase and many others. West Middle School will display her artwork in the main hallway.

2022 Doodle for Google judges include Selena Gomez, Artist, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist; Elyse Fox, Director, Model and Mental Health Activist; and Juliana Urtubey, 2021 National Teacher of the Year.

To help their favorites succeed, everyone across the U.S.A. can vote for their favorite Doodle from the 54 State and Territory Winners. Voting information will be shared on this page and by Google once opened. The public vote will determine the Five National Finalists (one in each grade group). Google will announce these five National Finalists in June, one of which will have their Doodle featured on the Google homepage for a day.

The National Winner will take home a $30,000 college scholarship and their school will receive a $50,000 tech package towards the establishment or improvement of a computer lab or technology program.
