Shakopee Public Schools recently completed the public sale of the Central Building located on Holmes Street in downtown Shakopee. The Central Building property was purchased by the Scott County Community Development Agency (CDA). The Central Building has served the community in various ways since it was built. As part of the approved sale,  there will be a demolition of the building later this summer (2023).

“We appreciate the work that was completed with various parties, including the City of Shakopee and Scott County CDA, to ensure the best path forward for this site. The Central Building has been a longstanding part of the Shakopee community and we are pleased to have the ability to preserve the mural that has been located within the building,” shared Mike Redmond, Superintendent of Shakopee Public Schools.

The Central Building mural, which was commissioned in 1938, will be preserved in partnership with the Midwest Conservation Center. The future location for the mural has not yet been finalized. The mural tells a story of Shakopee from 1842 to 1940. Mr. Harmon Arndt, a graduate of the Minneapolis School of Art, was employed to create the mural along with three other artists. 

Demolition Update

During the week of August 21, 2023, environmental hazard removal was completed. 

August 28, 2023, served as day one of the physical deconstruction of the Central Building. Braun Intertec is providing high-powered, professional dust control.

During the week of September 5, 2023, the above grade demolition was completed and efforts are focused on removing the foundation.

Future Steps: Rachel Contracting will continue to remove the foundation and other site elements in preparation for the next phase of the site’s use.
