Voters Approve Both Questions on November 2 Operating Levy Request

Shakopee Public Schools Unofficial Special Election Results Released

Local voters approved both questions on the Shakopee Public Schools operating levy request in the November 2, 2021 special election.  Question 1 received 5,060 yes votes and 2,566 no votes according to unofficial results published after closing activities. Question 2 received 4,774 yes votes and 2,836 no votes.

“The school board brought two separate questions before voters this election in order to clearly break down the per pupil funding needs while still asking for an amount less than most neighboring districts,” states School Board Treasurer Joe Aldrich. “This voter approved operating levy will provide our district the necessary operating funds to restore class sizes to what they were a year ago, to tackle the structural budget deficit and to move the compensation for our teachers and support staff towards the mid-range of comparable districts.”

Approval of the operating levy allows the district to restore previous class sizes and the teaching positions lost in recent budget cuts. It also brings back two counseling positions, two paraprofessional positions and restores 5th grade band, ACT payment support and College in the Schools Classes. With the approval of question two, additional enhancements will be made to class sizes, fine arts and activity offerings, walking distances for grades 9-12 and compensations for teachers.

“We’ve continued to state throughout this process that we will always do our best to serve Shakopee students and the community. The approval of both questions on the operating levy will now allow us to meet our current financial challenges and provide more direct support for student learning,” states Superintendent Mike Redmond. “Our entire school district is grateful for the community’s support of our students and school district via this new operating levy. We look forward to continuing to build a school district that makes our community exceptionally proud.”

Election results are unofficial until certified by the School Board at 7pm on November 11, 2021 at the District Office - Board Room.
