On June 24, 2024, the School Board of Independent School District No.720, State of Minnesota approved a resolution to hold its general election for the purpose of electing three (3) school board members for terms of four (4) years each. The general election is hereby called and directed to be held in conjunction with the statewide general election on Tuesday, the 5th day of November, 2024, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the period for filing affidavits of candidacy for the office of School Board Member of Independent School District No. 720 shall begin on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, and shall close at 5:00 o'clock p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. The last day for candidates to withdraw is at 5:00 o'clock p.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

The affidavits below were accepted during the filing period that ended at 5:00 o'clock p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. The candidates are also listed on the Minnesota Secretary of State's website and are listed in filing order.

The clerk shall include on the ballot the names of the individuals who file or have filed affidavits of candidacy during the period established for filing such affidavits. The clerk shall not include on the ballot the names of individuals who file timely affidavits of withdrawal in the manner specified by law.
Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, Section 205A.11, the precincts and polling places for this general election are those polling places and precincts or parts of precincts located within the boundaries of the school district and which have been established by the cities or towns located in whole or in part within the school district. The voting hours at those polling places shall be the same as for the state general election.

Individuals interested in becoming a School Board Member must file an Affidavit of Candidacy form (found below) and pay a $2 filing fee (cash, exact change, or check payable to Shakopee Public Schools - please do not mail cash) during the above filing period.
There are two ways to file during the noted period.
- In-Person at the District Office
- Located at 1200 Shakopee Town Square, Shakopee, MN 55379. The District Office will be open 8am - 4pm, Monday - Friday, during the filing period with extended hours of 8am - 5pm on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. If the filing officer is not present to accept the filing form, the form must be notarized.
- By Mail
- Send the complete form and filing fee to the address below. A completed form, which includes a live signature, notary stamp and filing fee, must be received by 5pm on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

Important Reminders: Please note that the Affidavit of Candidacy must be notarized and filled out completely; name pronunciation forms are appreciated but not required. Email Affidavit of Candidacy forms cannot be accepted. A copy of your filing application (affidavit of candidacy) will be provided. Each Affidavit of Candidacy will be provided by the district to Scott County at the close of each business day. Scott County manages candidate website postings directly. Legal Requirements - Running for School Board
- To qualify for election to your local school board you must:
- be at least 21 years of age or more upon assuming office
- have not filed for another office at the upcoming primary or general election
- be an eligible voter in Minnesota
- be a district resident for at least 30 days (M.S. 204B.06, Subd. 1) before the general election
- have not been convicted of an offense for which they are required to register as a predatory offender under Minnesota Statutes 243.166
- School board members are elected to 4-year terms and take office the first Monday in January (M.S. 123B.09, Subd. 1).
- By law, (M.S. 123B.09, Subd.1) the school boards in Minnesota are made up of either 6 or 7 members. Some exceptions have been created by special legislation, often for consolidated districts.
- A conflict of interest if you are a board member and
- expect to make over $20,000 as an employee of the district in any fiscal year
- have a personal financial interest in the sale, lease or contract with the district (there are exceptions) (M.S. 471.87 and M.S. 471.88) or
- hold another elected position except township board (Op. Att’y Gen. 358 Dec. 18, 1970)
- Board Authority: M.S. 123B.02, Subd. 1, states that “the board must have the general charge of the business of the district, the school houses, and of the interests of the schools thereof. The board’s authority to govern, manage, and control the district; to carry out its duties and responsibilities; and to conduct the business of the district includes implied powers in addition to any specific powers (of which there are many) granted by the legislature.” The board’s authority must be reconciled with M.S. 123B.143 which states that all districts maintaining a classified secondary school must employ a superintendent. A number of specific duties of the superintendent are noted in the statute.

Campaign Financial Report Certification of Filing
The certification shall be submitted to the filing officer, who is located at the District Office, not later than seven days after the general or special election.

Affidavit of Withdrawal Form
A candidate who has filed an affidavit of candidacy may remove his or her name from the ballot by filing an affidavit of withdrawal by 5 p.m. no later than 2 days after the end of the filing period (August 15, 2024). The affidavit of withdrawal is filed with the same filing officer where the original affidavit of candidacy was filed - Shakopee Public Schools District Office.
